Katherine McCarty

A native of Charlotte, Katherine 'migrated' to Western North Carolina after living 30 years in Atlanta. She had taken a summer session at Penland School in the year 2000, and later enrolled in the 8-week concentration in Clay. Longing to return to the mountains she had grown up knowing and loving, she soon moved to Spruce Pine and continued taking community art classes in clay, pastels, and in watercolor and oil painting. Katherine has a Master's in Counseling with a concentration in Art Therapy. Art has now become her personal therapy and she paints strictly for her own pleasure. She is certified as a Usui Reiki Master and Emotion Code Practitioner and has a small private healing practice. Inspired by the natural beauty in the area, she enjoys plein air painting and loves taking group workshops with various instructors. She also has a studio at home where she enjoys using her Mother's easels and brushes. Most recently, Katherine has been studying advanced studio painting with Curt Butler in Gastonia, NC. "The challenge and the satisfaction of seeing a painting evolve under excellent class instruction has been very exciting, informative, and rewarding." Katherine is a member of the Toe River Arts Council (TRAC); the Blue Ridge Fine Arts Guild (BRAG); and the NC Plein Air Painters.
